Oh Sam

Oh Sam First let me say that I am touched that Sam dedicated his BAREFOOT CONTESSA blog entry to me. I know how much that entry must mean to him, judging by how many times I heard that good neighbor policy story. However, this entry is dedicated to Sam, who neglected to mention that HE is also celebrating his birthday today (along with myself and Bens Mom, of course). Oh Sam. While Im talking about Sam, I just have to tell you a little detail of my life, just because its amusing to me. So Sam works the front desk at Burton Conner, and often Ill see him while coming and going. Its just a few seconds before Im out the front door or into the elevator or staircase, but whenever I see him, as long as he doesnt look terribly busy I make a point to say hi. Now, as I mentioned, its only a few seconds, so I just blurt out a crisp, Hey, Sam. And every single freaking time, it makes me think of Clarissa Explains it All. Please, please, someone out there tell me you know exactly what Im talking about and it doesnt make me crazy. Anyway, my birthday has been pretty boring so far. I turn twenty, which Im starting to refer to as my early life crisis. (No longer a teenager! What?!) And Im still at home even though all of my friends have gone back to school because I have to wait to get the rest of the stitches from my wisdom tooth extraction out. I really, really want to be enjoying IAP right now, but instead Ive been spending hours upon hours watching midmorning television programming. (I dont want to admit to how many episodes of MTVs Super Sweet Sixteen I watched in horror.) Well, thats all from me. Back to your regularly scheduled programming. The role of the father, a male figure in a child’s life is a very crucial role that has been diminishing over the years. An absent father can be defined in two ways; the father is physically not present, or the father is physically present, but emotionally present. To an adolescent, a father is an idolized figure, someone they look up to (Feud, 1921), thus when such a figure is an absent one, it can and will negatively affect a child’s development. Many of the problems we face in society today, such as crime and delinquency, poor academic achievement, divorce, drug use, early pregnancy and sexual activity can be attributed to fathers being absent during adolescent development (Popenoe, 1996; Whitehead, 1993). On their 10 year follow up, Wallerstein and Kelley found that regardless of the time spent with a father or not, the father continued to be a significant presence psychologically to adolescents, particularly to boys (Jones et al., as cited in Wallerstein, Kelley, 1974). On Kelley and Wallerstein’s 25 year follow up of their now adult participants in their longitudinal study, they have found that the effects of fatherlessness and divorce during their adolescents were long lasting. The participants in the study by Wallerstein et al. (2000) noted that â€Å"The impact of divorce hits them most cruelly as they go in search of love, sexual intimacy, and commitment† (p. 299). These same participants also stated in an interview that they had anxiety issues about relationships and intimacy problems into adulthood (Jones et al., as cited in Wallerstein et al., 2000). A report by the New York Times calculated that there are more big companies ran by men named John than there are big companies ran by women in the United States. While women are beginning to take on larger roles in corporations, governments, and society, as a whole, there is still the very large issue of small representation of women in leadership roles. Through discussing Marion Young’s â€Å"On Female Body Experience† I intend to argue that when women face a limited range of bodily comportment, it translates to a limited ability to reach our full potential as people. Substance Abuse in the Workplace As widespread drug use is on the rise, many employers have begun to worry about the performance of their employees. Absenteeism, injuries, loss of productivity, employee morale, theft and fatalities are just some of the causes of drug use in the workplace. The idea of drug testing among workers has developed from society's concern over a perceived increase in the use of drugs and the relation between drug use and impairment, with resultant risks to the worker, fellow workers and the public. As early as 1987, 21% of employers had instituted drug-testing programs. Employers have begun to think that mass drug tests are the answer to their problems. What many of these employers don't know is that there are many problems that surround drug testing at work. One of the biggest of these problems is whether or not it is constitutional to conduct drug tests on the employees. Employers fail to educate themselves with established or recent laws about drug testing in the workplace and about huma n rights. Also, mass, low-cost screening tests may not be reliable or valid. Alcohol testing does not differentiate casual drinking from alcohol dependence or alcoholism. Drug tests can create an untrustworthy environment for the employees. There are better ways to address substance abuse. Drug testing in the workplace is an important issue for all of Canada's labour force, regardless if it's you're first job or if you've had a steady job for 30 years. Many employees, who have had to subjugate themselves to degrading and demeaning drug tests, feel that these tests violate their constitutional rights. It is an infringement on their privacy.
